A pair of Golden Retriever puppies play at the Arroyo Verde Dog Park in Ventura, California. In the lead is a beautiful 8 month old Golden Retriever male. Close behind is a much younger Golden Retriever puppy only weeks old.

Golden Retrievers are always very popular dogs. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says they are one of the most popular breeds they register. In 2009 they were ranked number four in total registrations behind Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs and Yorkshire Terriers. They held the same rank in 2008 but were number two in 2004 and 1999.

Generally considered an intelligent breed with a desire to please, anyone who has met a large sampling of Golden Retrievers can tell you that, like any breed, there are also a few examples that seem to fit the stereotype term “dumb blond.” Even those usually want to make their people happy.

Einstein or not, with its namesake and often beautiful golden coat, these dogs tend to be loving and wonderful members of the family whether they are simply pets, or active in field sports like hunting. They have also shined as assistance dogs in many of those specialties.

Have you ever noticed that accent when they bark? Just kidding, but they do come from Scotland says the AKC where a Lord Tweedmouth bred the dogs to fit his desire for a retriever that would excel in the Scottish environment. The organization says today’s Goldens are a blend of Irish Setter, Bloodhound, the extinct Tweed Water Spaniel and what they call the original “Yellow Retriever.”
