DogExplorer.com News – The hidden world of dog food brands and pet treats became a little less obscure today with the announcement by Alabama-based Sunshine Mills, Inc., that their dog treats and biscuits are also being recalled due to the use of suspect wheat gluten from the same supplier that provided wheat gluten to Menu Foods.
The recall stems from concerns batches of wheat gluten may be tainted with melamine, a substance with unknown toxicity to pets but which is not approved as a pet food ingredient.
As with Menu Foods, this announcement reveals the extent to which brands, appearing to be independent and unique, are often in fact simply re-packaged or private labeled versions of a mass-market product produced by one specialty company.
Sunshine Mill’s in-house brands subject to recall are:
|Nurture Chicken & Rice, Nurture Lamb & Rice, Pet Life Large, Pet Life Extra Large, Pet Life Large Variety, Pet Life Large Peanut Butter, Lassie Lamb and Rice, and Pet Life People Pleasers Dog Treats.|
Private label products made for Wal-Mart (Walmart) and others like Stater Brothers include:
|Companion’s Best Multi Flavor Biscuit, Stater Brothers Large Biscuit, Ol’Roy Peanut Butter Biscuit, Ol’Roy 4 Flavor Large Biscuit, Ol’Roy Puppy Biscuit, Champion Breed Peanut Butter Biscuit, Champion Breed Large Biscuit, Perfect Pals Large Biscuit, Stater Brothers Large Biscuit|
The firm says this recall is precautionary in nature and that they have no reports of sick animals.
While dog owners should stop feeding the recalled products to their pets, it appears the risk is low. According to Sunshine Mills, “The recalled dog biscuits contain one percent or less by weight of wheat gluten.”
