Warning: The facts in the following news item about cruelty to dogs in eastern Washtenaw County Michigan may disturb some readers. Newspaper stories published today state that approximately 40 animals, including 10 dogs thought to be family pets, have been reported dead and mutilated in a 3-mile radius of Superior Township, Michigan, since January 2006.



According to a story in the Detroit Free Press, hunters found a cocker spaniel with a gunshot wound in the back of its head on Sunday, March 26. Investigators from the Humane Society of Huron Valley responded and found a pit bull puppy whose neck and legs were bound with twine dead at the scene.

The most recent discoveries differ from some of the earlier gruesome finds, which included a decapitated yellow Labrador Retriever and Rottweiler. The article in the Detroit Free Press says the reward for assistance in finding the perpetrators offered by the Humane Society of Huron Valley is now $10,000, up from an earlier reward of $6,000

* Transporting an animal in a vehicle in a cruel or inhumane manner
* Either poisoning or exposing an animal to poison
* The cropping of a dog’s ears or the docking of a dog’s tails, unless such cropping is performed by a registered veterinary surgeon while the dog is under anesthetic
