Say hello to Shania, a sweet, beautiful Labrador Retriever puppy rescued by the amazing folks at Southern California Labrador Retriever Rescue (SCLRR). Note please the satellite dish around her head and the scary scar on her leg. At the time this picture was taken this little girl was just a few days past major surgery on her leg to correct a condition that nearly cost her life.

Only 8 months old or so, Shania began to limp and show serious signs of leg pain and weakness. The veterinarian informed the prior owner that both rear legs required surgery to correct a luxating patella. This is a condition Ansel, the inspiration for DogExplorer, also suffered. He too had this surgery. The bill for Shania? The estimate was some $8,000 which was beyond the means of her prior owners. They asked their veterinarian to euthanize this otherwise gentle, young and healthy dog. Fortunately, he asked them instead to relinquish her to his care, which they did. He contacted SCLRR and they took over her guardianship while arranging for her medical care and preparation for eventual adoption by a forever home.

As this story is published Shania has completed her second surgery and is weeks into her recovery. Perhaps you’d care to help SCLRR recover some of the costs they have shouldered for her care? They have a special “Polly” Memorial Fund set up, says SCLRR, to exclusively provide for the unexpected medical expenses of their foster dogs. You can make a tax deductible donation in Shania’s name to the Polly Memorial Fund.

To learn more about Shania, SCLRR or how you can donate money or your time to help these wonderful dogs in need, please visit their website: Southern California Labrador Retriever Rescue (a new window will open)

Are you in Ventura County, Santa Barbara or Los Angeles? If you’d like to meet Shania come out to a special fund raiser for her Saturday, 16 July 2011, at Bark Em Pet Supplies, 1775 East Daily Drive, Camarillo (map – a new window will open).

The only thing better than dog pictures and cute photographs of puppies are dogs and puppies themselves. So to celebrate our dog buddies, we are running a regular feature where we publish a single dog picture either shot by one of our readers or produced by DogExplorer.com

There are no prizes and it is not a contest. But if you have a picture you think worthy of our front page, please upload it to the correct album in our dog picture gallery and then send us a note through our contact page. These pictures can be anything dog related, from portraits at rest to action shots and funny moments.
